Degree Requirements College of Pharmacy 

Degree Requirements

All students must be admitted to candidacy to pursue the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences. Admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree in the department is a two-part process.

Part one is satisfied by successful completion of the core courses:


During the second semester, a research advisor and graduate committee must be selected.

Part two is completed in the third semester by submission of a doctoral program of study form and an initial research proposal, which must be presented and defended to the student’s graduate committee.


In semesters four through six, a comprehensive examination must be satisfied by submission and defense of an NIH-style research proposal. Finally, a seminar based on the student’s dissertation must be presented, followed by an oral defense of it.

In addition to the general requirements listed above, candidates for the Ph.D. degree are required to complete four departmental seminar courses:


Additional information:


A maximum of 4 hours credit can be earned for PHAR 712. All students are required to submit a dissertation based upon original research, meeting all requirements of The Graduate School, and a manuscript(s) for publication prior to award of the degree. No more than 12 hours of credit for PHAR 899 will be allowed for dissertation research and writing. Further degree requirements for each specialty area are listed below. Students must earn at least 60 hours of graduate course work beyond the baccalaureate for a doctoral degree.

Courses for the Pharm.D. and Ph.D. (60 Hours)


In addition to the general requirements listed above, students pursuing the Pharm.D. and Ph.D. concurrently will take elective courses that are approved for graduate credit and fulfill requirements for the Ph.D. program. Electives in the Pharm.D. curriculum: up to nine credit hours can count toward both degrees, with the following stipulations. The student must have completed at least 90 hours of undergraduate course work, have a minimum GPA of 3.40, and have form GS-59 on file in The Graduate School. A grade of B or higher must be earned for the course to count for graduate credit. At least half of the electives must be numbered 700 or above. Courses numbered 500-699 are acceptable only if they have been approved for graduate credit. Graduate courses taught in units other than pharmacy must be approved by the graduate faculty of pharmacy as appropriate for a Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences. Registration for each course requires approval of the student’s advisor, the chair of the student’s departent, the graduate director of the Ph.D. program, and the dean of The Graduate School. Form GS-59A must be processed for each graduate credit course at the time of registration to permit the registrar’s office to properly enroll the student for graduate credit.

Ph.D.—Pharmacy Administration option (55 Hours)


All students must complete 64 to 67 credit hours for the degree. The course requirement includes 55 hours of core courses and 9 to 12 hours of minor cognate courses.1

1Students must also take 12 hours* of minor cognate courses in one of the following areas: marketing, public policy, economics, or epidemiology. Examples of courses that will satisfy the minor cognate requirement include:

Marketing: MKTG 702, 704, etc.
Public Policy: POLI 706, 757, etc.
Economics: ECON 594, 740, etc.
Epidemiology: 701, 741, etc.
*3 credit hours from the common core required courses may be applied if the course is in the student’s chosen area of concentration.

2HADM 846 is an acceptable substitute.
